InDesign New Features 2019

6 Ways Adobe Creative Suite is making designers’ lives easier with Creative Cloud 2019

The new Adobe Creative Suite products are here and with them are potential headaches for learners. We’ll be talking about the new features of InDesign, Photoshop, & Illustrator for the next few weeks on the blog so stay tuned for additional insight. And if you’re feeling confused by some of the new tools, we’ve got your back with trainings tailored to your specific needs.

Introducing InDesign CC 2019

With the release of InDesign CC 2019, Adobe has decided to offload some of the design grunt work to artificial intelligence and leave the meat of visual design to us. Hooray! Features like proportional resizing, visual font browsing, & auto-fitting content frames greatly improve the intuitiveness of using InDesign.

Here you’ll find a few of the most talked about additions to InDesign CC 2019 and see how they stand to make your life as a designer better.

Simplifying previously manual processes

1. Adjust Layout

Need to resize a page and dreading what it will do to all the content you’ve already placed? This new feature intuitively resizes the content of your page as you change the page dimensions. Turn that 4X6 postcard into a half page in no time. No more stressing over the design whims of your most indecisive clients.

2. Content- Aware Fit

Can’t remember the difference in keyboard shortcuts for “Fit content proportionally” and “Fill frame proportionally”? We get it; your brain only has so much space. In the past, these keyboard shortcuts were the most efficient way to reposition content in a frame. Thanks to Adobe’s endeavors in machine learning, affectionately called Adobe Sensei, frames will adjust content to show the most important features, but you have to turn on this feature first!

3. Space Between Paragraphs

Did you notice how these processes keep getting more granular? First layout, then frames, now paragraph styles. That’s the amount of detail we love and expect from our friends at Adobe. With this tool, you can determine the spacing between paragraphs of the same style. If this sounds foreign to you, maybe you need a refresher on paragraph & text styles—something we offer in our InDesign classes, just sayin’.

4. Font Panel Upgrade

Previously known as “TypeKit,” now Adobe Fonts integrates directly into your Adobe programs so that you can see what fonts look like as you browse them. You can also organize and filter fonts, and search for that frustrating missing typeface all in the same view. Additional props to Adobe for enabling users to activate any of the 700+ Adobe fonts right in InDesign rather than opening TypeKit.

5. Properties Panel

Finally, a properties panel that knows the real you. The updated properties panel displays the information and tools relevant to the object selected. Working on a frame with linked content in the middle of page of text? When you select the frame, options like Text Wrap, Transform, Corner Options, Alignment, and Stroke/Fill will appear in the Properties Panel. No more searching for the tools you need in various panels—they’re all within reach now.

6. Import PDF comments

One of the best process improvements is the ability to import a marked-up PDF into InDesign and incorporate feedback seamlessly. Say your client litters a document with comments and suggestions. When you import the comments into InDesign, you can go through each comment and the corresponding content will be highlighted for your review. From there, you’re given the opportunity to accept comments and mark resolved or leave unresolved…at your own peril.
