Adding Motion Blur Effects in Photoshop CC (2014)

The all the Creative Cloud for 2014 is here and that means new updates for all our favorite Adobe applications, including Photoshop. One of the coolest new features in Photoshop CC is the addition of two blur filters to the Blur Gallery: the Spin Blur and Path Blur.

Spin Blur in Photoshop CC (2014)

The new Spin Blur is perfect for adding motion to circular objects like wheels or the clock example I demonstrate below. I highly recommend converting your object to a Smart object before applying the blur effect—this gives you the flexibility of making changes to the filter later or deleting it altogether. Once you select the Spin Blur, Photoshop will add a circular blur on your object. You can adjust the size by dragging the outer edge of the circle (to resize proportionally), or click and drag one of the four points to create an elliptical shape. In the example below, I am resizing the Spin Blur proportionally to fit the clock face. I then adjust the Blur Angle on the Blur Tools panel to get the result in the second image.

Path Blur in Photoshop CC (2014)

If you use the new Path Blur, Photoshop will add a straight blue line to your image to control the direction of the blur. You have the ability to adjust the length of the line, the direction and the curvature. Adjust the Speed and Taper sliders until you get the desired motion blur effect. Multiple Path and Spin blurs can be added to the same image.
